Around the bend…

It is again time to get a new calendar for the New Year. It seems I just got the 2009 calendar and now I am in November and I need 2010. Time seems to roll by faster and faster. But my calendar keeps me on time and usually where I am supposed to be. But it also reminds me that things do not always happen as I expect or as I plan.

I would never have expected that in late 2009 I would be working in Wayne County.  Nor in 1992 would I have predicted  that I would be a chaplain in a health care organization for 5 years.

We want to have a life that is orderly, predictable and safe. And we like to have insurance to cover us for any accidents, inconveniences and disasters that may come along. In fact some people see being a Christian as some sort of insurance against bad things happening to us. But if we look at Jesus’ life, and death we see that is not real

Life portrayed in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures in messy and uncertain, with all manner of unexpected occurrences and events – often dangerous or threatening.

IMG_1342_resize The promise of God is not that these things will not happen to us. But rather that no matter what happens God is there with us, supporting      strengthening, us so that we will not be over come by whatever it is just around the bend. And assuring us that there will be new life beyond what ever large or small deaths await us on our life’s journey.
